How to tell if a Internet Marketing course is worth looking at.
Yes, I’ve fallen for a few of the come-ons. With very professionally written copy, some of them are very enticing, but having made the mistakes, here is a list of ways to avoid getting taken in by the slick marketing tricks.
- If there are buzz words like “instant cash,” “automated,” “make money while you sleep,” “fast cash,” or anything similar, then it is probably not worth looking at. There is no free lunch.
- If you do buy in to a promotion and then they hit you with multiple up-sells, then it is probably not worth looking at. Now that you have bought in, you can be sure they will hit you with up-sells since you are on their mail list.
- If they tell you you are one of a very few that they are sharing this information with you can probably just take that as false.
- If they tell you to use “other peoples money” and they mean to use your credit card to finance your business, they are not only probably selling snake oil, but asking you to take on unnecessary debt as well.
- If they grill you to qualify your potential spend level before telling you how much it will cost, they are almost definitely just attempting to dig into your wallet.
- If they say “anyone” can do it “easily” with “no effort” – well, you know by now that effort is required and it is not entirely easy.
There is money to be made, for sure, but you do need to commit time to your business. It may not be difficult technically, but you do need research skills and a business acumen.
Just to remind myself and perhaps be a help to others. Here are some points for keywords and on page SEO.
- Keywords in the URL, ideally as the domain itself or at least near the beginning of the URL
- Keywords in the page title, again near the beginning
- Keywords in the META Description
- Keywords in the Meta Tags
- Keywords in the header tags, h1 preferably
- Keywords in img alt tags
- Keywords in the filename for images
- Keywords in the content
- Keywords in links
Probably the most important thing you can do as an Internet Marketer is to actually work on your market. There are tons of time sucks in this space. I find with all the mail lists and such that I am on that I’m getting pitches and training material from dozens of sources a day. Some of these are just plain sales pitches and not worth my time. There are a few that provide valuable information though. Increasingly, the pitches are video based, or teleconferences. I constantly look for ways to work more efficiently, and watching these videos is not an efficient use of my time. One way to speed up video playback is to use VLC. “VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVD, Audio CD, VCD, and various streaming protocols.” and it allows you do either slow down or speed up playback (command = to speed up or command – to slow down on a Mac, on Windows it is just the + or – key to speed up or slow down respectively). This is a totally free way to speed up video (hence the lack of an affiliate link). Ultimately though, as a marketer, I think it important that you provide VALUE in the first minute or two of a video. Far too many videos are 20-30 minutes or more in length and only provide value near the half way point or further. If it takes me more than a minute or two to get something out of the video, you’ve lost me. At the very least, if you do have a video with a lot of background at the beginning you should summarize what the video covers in some accompanying text.
From Newbie to Millionaire
“From Newbie to Millionaire” is a brillant resource. I know I’ve said it before, but there is a lot of bad information out there about Internet Marketing. It makes it all the more exceptional when I run across resources that provide valid information. Especially for very little money, or sometimes even free. It seems that many of the “systems” that promise you 1-click wealth or automated profits cost a bundle to buy into and provide dubious returns on investment. Internet Marketing really does come down to hard work – but it is hard work that can pay off. I read books and watch videos voraciously, and one of the book/video packages that really impressed me is Christine Clayfield’s “From Newbie To Millionaire“. The book is over 500 pages long and also comes with video tutorials to accompany the content. Christine tells it like it is. No “get rich quick” schemes, no “instant riches” but plenty of solid information on the right way to market online. “From Newbie to Millionaire” starts with some background for Newbies and then goes into things in the logical order of niche research, keyword research, site creation and wordpress, SEO, content creation (and PLR content), monetizing your site, things to do before you start sending traffic to your site and then ways to get traffic. She also covers some ways to make money online without a website at all, drop shipping and eCommerce and finishes with the “success formula explained.” All in all it is a good well rounded approach to creating multiple streams of internet income. You can get the hard cover book from Amazon
or you can download the ebook and get it right now if you are in a hurry. I actually started with the ebook version of “From Newbie to Millionaire”, but liked it so much that I bought the hard copy as an easier to hold reference (it is cheaper than printing 500+ pages from the PDF file).
There is benefit to having both as the ebook has clickable links and you can cut and paste from it. The hard copy book provides the convenience of easy page flipping and I find I just like the familiarity of books rather than paging through PDF files.
Market Samurai is amazing!
Opening up my email today I was really taken by the sheer number of high pressure emails designed to build a false sense of urgency with aggressive sales copy and bogus time constraints. I guess this must be working for some people, but it strikes me as hype. I believe if you need to hype a product, it probably lacks substance. I also believe that as an Internet Marketer you can still conduct yourself with integrity. There are so many “snake oil” salesmen out there it not easy to tell which products and services are worthwhile apart from the money wasters. Just as in the Bricks and Mortar world, I believe that it is much easier to retain existing customers by treating them fairly and not misleading them in order to grab a quick buck. Also, in the interest of being up front, I try to make it clear in my site Terms and Conditions of Use that my company may receive commissions for items on my sites. With all that in mind, there are some products and services out there that are invaluable to Internet Marketers, one of those is Market Samurai. Market Samurai is one of the best ways to research keywords and really target your niche. It offers ways to find relevant, high traffic keywords and assess the competition. Their support if fantastic and their FREE training videos are almost a complete course in Internet Marketing from keyword research and monetization to promotion. Market Samurai is well worth the price of $149.00 if you buy it now. It is such a strong product though, that they will let you try it for free for 12 days and during the trial period they will offer you a $52.00 discount! Of course, I’d prefer you just buy it now so I make a better commission, but I’d certainly understand why you may want to just go for the free trial.
I have tried a number of different programs and sites when I was first starting to get my marketing efforts off the ground. After signing up for numerous mail lists, I get many offers per day for “the next big thing” in Internet Marketing. Over the past few days one of these lists sent me a link for “training.” The training turned out to be a “live” webcast. It should be noted, I am using quotation marks in the previous sentences to denote misinformation. Now, I don’t think I wasted my time in watching what turned out to be a pitch for Alex Shelton’s product “VanquishX.” I went to the website at the prescribed time and thought myself lucky for being able to connect as I’ve been late for other webcasts in the past and was unable to log in. In this case, I went to the site and it “magically” seemed to log me in without requiring me to provide any log in credentials. Oh well (I thought), perhaps it cookied me when I signed up to reserve a spot previously. Anyway, the presentation started and he kept mentioning that “we are almost at capacity” in the meeting session and finally he stated that we were at capacity and no one else would be able to get in. Funny thing is, I opened a new session on another computer and lo and behold, I was able to get in on that computer too. I started it about 30 minutes after the first presentation and it started from the beginning rather than joining the one “in progress.” (There are those quotation marks again). I then went and searched through the warrior forum and found that the same presentation had been made to other list subscribers in the weeks past. In any case, I really hate deceptive marketing. I understand the need to create a sense of urgency, but there is a difference between an outright lie and ethical marketing. Do I feel like I wasted my time in watching the pitch? No, there is always something to be learned, even if it is what not to do. Do I trust the product in the pitch will live up to the hype? No, but it may offer some value to some folks, its just not for me. If it sounds too good to be true…
